The problem becomes even more acute in the summer season when air conditioners are being used in an increasing number of homes and offices. The industry uses more and more amounts of electricity as the Indian economic growth rate has exceeded at 8% in the last few years. Despite of that the electricity situation has not improved and it looks like will become miserable if the government doesn’t work on it. The sorry state of affairs is that the cost of fuel is rising but the electricity regulators are loath to increase prices. The Fast Growing Economy has resulted in higher demand for power which has not been met by increased demand. We being the citizen of this country have some responsibility and should help the government by using energy efficiently. About 65% of electricity consumed in India is generated by thermal power plants where different minerals like coals, different oils and gases are used to generate the energy, which can be conserve if we take a few steps at our home and work place by saving electricity.

Here are such few tips to reduce your electricity usage in summer,

Right lights:

Buy energy saving light bulbs. Use LED Lights and CFL Bulbs. They are four times more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, with same brightness. They are also economical in the long run. This saves a lot of electricity.Turn off Lights wherever possible, Use less light in home and light them only when necessary. In case of offices use automatic sensors which shut off the lighting system when not in use.

Home Appliances:

Refrigerators at optimum temperature as they account for about 20% of Household electricity use. Don’t overfill the refrigerator or freezer. Overfilling impedes the flow of cold air which results in a waste of electricity. Replace conventional regulators with electronic regulators for Fans.For Air Conditioners always keep them in energy saving mode. Don’t keep them at too cold a setting which will waste large amounts of energy as well. Make sure that that the AC is shaded and not exposed to direct sunlight unit operating in the shade needs up to 10 percent less electricity than one exposed to sun.Make sure your curtains or blinds seal your windows properly, and keep your curtains closed at night, and during the day when there is a heat-wave. Block voids around doors and windows to stop air leaking out.Your washing machine works most efficiently if you fill it up nicely with dirty clothes and use the requested amount of detergent only. If your clothes are not too dirty using cold water is fair enough.

 

Electronic Gadgets:

Phone charger uses energy even when your phone is not attached. Up to 10% of your electricity could be used by gadgets and appliances that are on standby.Do not switch on  the power when Audio Visual Systems are not in use. Keep your desktop screen in a power saving mode.

Use Alternative energy:

You can use a hand press juicer, a bike powered blender or washing machine. Put small solar panels, which will save a lot of your money and reduce the need to mine materials from the earth.
